Map Diversity and Mind Unity in Diversity - Create it & Accept it

Exploration and mapping go hand in hand. Recognizing that diversity is a great exploration opportunity sets the wheels -- and the world -- in motion. Not everyone feels this way, however. What metaphors for diversity might we use to communicate the power that it holds for us as those searching for new solutions to on many scales? 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

On the issue of diversity, the Net-Gold list on Yahoo Groups has quite a few posts that focus on various aspects of diversity. These may be found at this URL:
http colon slash slash tinyurl dot com slash 6glxja . Dealing with diversity in productive and peaceful ways is one of the major challenges of the twenty-first century along with finding solutions to global warming.

Sabin Bailey has been an occasional poster to both Net-Gold and to Newsroom-L. Sabin's posts are always useful and informative. Newsroom-L is a very useful discussion group run by Jules Seigel who lives in Cancun Mexico and has quite a lively group of posters on the list. Do you find this valuable?

Dear Sabin
yes, media-diversity mattes a lot, Kofi Annan invited for this topic the firste session ehen comming to office: VISION-TELEVISON: cultural rights, needs, responsibilities, ...
http://benking.de/Global-Change/un-vision-television.html
let us call it signs or diversity of signs. We had a special session on this with ICSU CODATA last year. Maybe enjoy:

But there is so much diversity as there are turfs. WE need to come to some practical, concrete, shared ways and means to overcome this. One intersting exit point might be "requisite variety" - care for the variety ! see this recent statement from a collegue:

2008/5/8 Robert Vallee <r.vallee@afscet.asso.fr>:
Cher Heiner,
I am in favour of requisite variety. Ashbyproposed the french translation : diversité indispensable, if I rememberwell. I say : « diversité nécessaire » and even « diversiténécessaire et suffisante », particularly in the cultural field.
Best,
Robert

as you see: nécessaire et suffisante - Necessary and Sufficiant
.... and for this some shared ! situational and value decisions have to be made !
Stumbling blocks preventing true dialog, peace-making, and reconciliation:
1) we fight over words but do not check the meaning,
2) we do not question and compare the values attached to statements and attitudes,
3) we do not contextualize and embody concepts ... ...>>>snip>>>

Stumbling blocks preventing true dialog, peace-making, and reconciliation:
1) we fight over words but do not check the meaning,
2) we do not question and compare the values attached to statements and attitudes,
3) we do not contextualize and embody concepts and meaning, do not check the sectors, regions, scales, proportions and consequences of alternative actions,
4) we do not give voice, empower, listen, cherish and cultivate difference or variety in dialog and decision making,
5) Disorientation and dumbing-down in Cyberculture and a misadministered and misunderstood, intangible “Globalisation”: Where we get overloaded by communication noise (sign/symbol melange) and media demagogy which means: no trust and fidelity in the statements and no ways and means to check the credibility and impact/relevance, and get lost between the scales, brackets, and sectors.
6) The above incompatibility and incomparability opens the door for over-claims and oversimplifications. Leaders use intangible jargon (plastic-words), neglect impacts and avoid instead of exploring differences and alternatives.

But let me come back to mapping, modelling, sharing DIVERSITY.
we first need to check if we talk about:
natural, biological, cultural, temporal, spacial, lingual, media (signs), artistic or creative diversity - and who speaks about it in which situation from which background position... maybe see me, we you, they, others,.. models : http://benking.de/cob-paris.html

The Cultures and Powers of Diversity
Map Diversity and Mind Unity in Diversity - Create it & Accept it - Share & Expand it !

It is a global event with the usual suspects in the international arena, but also involves minority groups, the whole range of issues having voice - or not...

Part IV
Citation as above from: jwneastro
”Dealing with diversity in productive and peaceful ways is oneof the major challenges of the twenty-first century along with findingsolutions to global warming”.

This is exactly what I am concerned about. This dealing has a discursive, participatory dimension, but also a normative and prognostic dimension. To deal only with one of these three brought the Club of Rome, right before its beginning to the Methoden Streit and the Chaos and Confusion resulting from one eyed approaches with the tools and hand....
see in the link above: http://benking.de/open-forum/dialog/Transcultural_Dialog_and_Peace.htm a guy called Alexander Christakis - and there we are at systemic laws and axioms which are needed to not get lost in noise and Cybeculture - runing from one "turn" to the next....

We opted for more some time ago for more: For Ways and Means towards Global Stability - The The Confernece theme was: Africa beyond Poverty (1995)
http://benking.de/Global-Change/globalstability.html

here were our 3 actions items which need to be addressed (asap) - you see less that 10 Millennium Goals - and more to the roots of teh matter. because not always the biggest visible problem is a root problem - and tesholds and leverage points are not obvious on the first glance and cry for attention.... so everbody can see the ground...

PART V (end)

I. THEGLOBAL CHALLENGE
The inability tosustain the present global situationcan be characterized by three critical trends:
• overpopulationand continuing population growth, especiallyin the developing countries;
• overconsumption and accelerating resource exploitation,primarily in the developed countries, but increasingly also in variouscountries in transition to a higher state of development;
• socialdisintegration, caused by an increase in the (bynow, excessive) speed of innovation processes in all areas; processeswhichare being driven by technological and economical dynamics, but whicharenot being societally controlled, and which are leading to growingunemployment, social unrest and corresponding threats to social security systems.

My "last" systemic, organistic, pragmatic, concrete recommendation would be to read this lecture: It is by Charles Francois, Founder and Editor of the International Encyclopedia of Systems and Cybernetics:
The need for an integrated systemic-cyberneticlanguage for concepts and models in complex and vague subject areas:
http://benking.de/systems/encyclopedia/concepts-and-models.htm
and also maybe have some "new terms" in his Encyclopedia which might help for the way...:
http://benking.de/systems/encyclopedia/newterms/

LAST NOT LEAST: this report to the club of Rome was hitting the streets in Berlin 1995:
'THE CAPACITY TO GOVERN'
Written in English and Hebrew, it was first published in German in 1995, lagter in Spanish and 6 years later !! in English (not only much time and insights - also much of its content was lost on the way.... (but Governance Students nowadays take this is Source) Isn't it a strange mono-lingual world - with little space for difference - or call it Diversity...!??)
maybe read our 7 points to remember for the press conference 1995 in Berlin:
http://benking.de/Global-Change/governance.html

best

Heiner

PS:
I have to add here: what I forgot on the GOLD list:
please see this page on LITERACY - EARTH LITERACY - any LITERACY
here: http://in-betweener.org/flatworlds/

a quotation from Kofi ANNAN i like very much:

"Our biggest challenge in this new century is to take an idea that sounds abstract - sustainable development -
and turn it into reality for all the world's people.
Making the abstract real and developing the capacities of individuals and societies to work for a sustainable future is,
essentially, an educational enterprise. "
Kofi Annan
